In a notable development, Indian Army brigadiers and generals have abandoned their distinctive regiment-specific accoutrements, lanyards, and headgear, opting for standardised attire in dark olive green uniforms. This move, mandated by the Army headquarters, aims to promote a common identity and approach in service matters among senior officers. The directive came into effect on August 1.

Under this new "uniformity in uniform" policy, Army chief, approximately 80 Lieutenant Generals, 300 Major Generals, and 1,200 Brigadiers, totaling 43,000 officers in the 12-lakh strong force, donned the same dark olive green berets (or black peak caps), anodised brass rank badges, scarlet gorget patches, and black leather belts adorned with the Indian Army logo, disregarding their previous regimental distinctions. Additionally, they have done away with lanyards, which were previously worn in various colors based on regimental affiliations.

However, it is essential to note that the uniforms of junior officers, ranging from Lieutenants to Colonels, remain unchanged. They will continue wearing their respective accoutrements that signify their arms, regiments, and services. This decision is seen as vital to preserve the camaraderie, esprit de corps, and regimental ethos among the junior leadership and the rank and file in different units.

According to military officials, these distinctive accoutrements foster a strong bond between officers and the troops they lead on the ground, particularly at the battalion or unit level. By retaining these traditions for the junior ranks, the Indian Army aims to maintain a sense of unity and cohesion within the forces.

In addition to the uniformity measure, the Indian Army had introduced a new ergonomically designed combat uniform last year. This modern attire features a "unique digital disruptive pattern," offering enhanced benefits such as being lighter, stronger, more breathable, and easier to maintain. Notably, the new combat uniform eliminates the need for a belt, as the shirt is not tucked into the trouser.

The implementation of the "uniformity in uniform" policy for senior officers is expected to enhance a shared identity and approach within the Indian Army`s upper echelons. While preserving the distinctive regimental affiliations for junior officers, this move further emphasises unity and camaraderie, which are considered the bedrock of soldiering.
