A significant revelation of the indiscriminate sale of branded medicines on a large scale has been exposed at the district Hospital in Dehradun, commonly known as Coronation Hospital. The Janaushadi Kendra, operating within its premises, was discovered to be in violation of its mandated purpose by selling branded medicines.

During a surprise inspection conducted by District Collector Sonika, the Janaushadi Kendra was caught red-handed selling branded medicines within the Coronation Hospital premises. The collector identified numerous branded medicines of higher value at the Janaushadhi Kendra. The Hospital superintendent was instructed to initiate an inquiry and submit the report to the district collector’s office for further action.

Janaushadhi Kendra, an initiative by the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers through the Department of Pharmaceuticals, was established with the goal of reducing the healthcare budget for every citizen of India by providing quality generic medicines at affordable prices.

However, there is a growing trend of some of these Kendras being reported for selling branded medicines. The primary motivation behind the sale of branded medicines by Janaushadhi pharmacists appears to be the temptation to earn higher margins for profiteering.
