In a significant development, eighteen distinct products, including indigenous millets like Mandava, Jhangora, and Lal Chawal from Uttarakhand, have been officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) Certification tags.

This prestigious recognition not only contributes to the marketing and promotion of these authentic regional products but also serves as a crucial safeguard for their originality, emphasizing their specific geographical origin.The GI tagging process is facilitated by the GI Registry wing of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Government of India. The registry meticulously conducts cross-verification processes, considering factors such as longitude and latitude, quality, and the geographical and climate conditions associated with each product before awarding the coveted GI tag.

This marks the culmination of a comprehensive process that has been underway for some time, and it is noteworthy that this is the first instance where 18 products from Uttarakhand have collectively received the esteemed GI tags. With this recent addition, a total of 27 products from the state have now been officially recognized with GI tags.

Among the diverse range of products acknowledged are Berinag Tea, Munduva, Gehat Dal, Red Rice, Black Soyabean, Malta, Chaulai, and Almora’s Lakhori Chillies, each representing the rich agricultural and artisanal heritage of Uttarakhand. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has granted GI tags to these products after careful consideration of their unique attributes. This recognition not only elevates the status of these local products but also reinforces Uttarakhand's position on the national and global stage, emphasizing the state's commitment to preserving and promoting its distinctive cultural and agricultural identity.
