Uttarakhand Maps 100 Trek Routes, Offline App to Help Trekkers Navigate Without Network
Dehradun: Trekking in Uttarakhand’s remote Himalayan areas could soon become safer with an offline GPS-based mobile app. The Tourism Department is mapping around 100 trekking and hiking routes using GPS and GIS technology.
The app will work without mobile network and provide information on routes, camping sites, water sources and emergency points.
The project by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) and Trek The Himalayas covers 10 districts, including Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Dehradun and Pauri. Major routes such as Gaumukh-Tapovan, Milam Glacier, Panchachuli Base Camp and Nanda Devi East Base Camp are being mapped.
The project is targeted for completion in about one year and aims to improve navigation and safety on remote trekking routes where poor mobile connectivity can make rescue operations difficult.
