Pithoragarh: Uttarakhand has become the first Himalayan state to export trout to Nepal and supply it to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The achievement was highlighted at a review meeting on the Pithoragarh Coldwater Fisheries Cluster chaired by Union Fisheries Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi on October 19.

The meeting focused on a five-year roadmap to boost trout farming, improve market access and increase farmers’ incomes. Discussions covered affordable fish feed, transportation costs, cold-chain infrastructure and better prices for farmers.

Woman fish farmer Rekha Joshi shared that value-added products, including fish balls, fish fingers and fish momos, generate daily sales of around ₹5,000.

Dr. Likhi urged other Himalayan states to explore trout supply agreements with ITBP and other armed forces. The meeting also emphasised farmer training, modern infrastructure and export opportunities to strengthen coldwater fisheries.
