Uttarakhand Partners with Iceland’s Verkís for Geothermal Energy Exploration

The Uttarakhand government and Iceland`s Verkís Consulting Engineers have signed an agreement for the exploration and development of geothermal energy. The agreement was finalized in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Iceland’s Ambassador, Dr. Benedikt Jónsson.

A plan has been formulated to harness geothermal energy at 40 identified sites in Uttarakhand. With Verkís’ expertise, this initiative will promote clean energy and sustainable development. It will also contribute significantly to India`s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2070. The initial cost of the project’s feasibility study will be borne by the Icelandic government.

Chief Minister Dhami described this agreement as a milestone for the energy sector in the state and the country. He emphasized that Iceland’s expertise could position Uttarakhand as a leader in geothermal energy.

According to the Geological Survey of India, 40 sites in the state have been identified as suitable for geothermal energy development. This initiative will pave the way for clean energy, environmental protection, and inclusive development.
