New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Monday sharply questioned the Uttarakhand government over large-scale encroachment of forest land, slamming the authorities for acting as “silent spectators” while protected areas were allegedly grabbed.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, asked the state to file a comprehensive counter affidavit within two weeks. The court sought details of site plans, the extent of encroachment, and the nature of constructions raised on forest and government land to decide whether a deeper probe is needed.

The apex court warned that every executive authority in the state would be held accountable for negligence. It also reiterated its earlier directions restraining private parties from creating third-party rights, banning fresh construction, and directing the forest department to take possession of vacant land except existing residential houses.
