In a continued battle against the rampant poaching of the endangered Himalayan Musk Deer, Chamoli Police, in collaboration with the Special Operations Group and Forest Department, successfully apprehended two individuals at the Karnaprayag Bus Stand.

Seizing a grim haul, law enforcement recovered musk sacs weighing 40.27 grams and 39.85 grams, extracted from a male alpine musk deer, along with two teeth. Shockingly, the arrested poachers confessed to employing traps for their illicit activities in the Vaan-Kanol forests of the district.

This incident comes merely a month after the arrest of four poachers of Nepalese origin in Joshimath, underscoring the persistent and escalating threat faced by the Himalayan Musk Deer population.

Distinguishing itself as a separate species, the Alpine Musk Deer, native to the Himalayan foothills, holds the prestigious status of being the state animal of Uttarakhand. Despite conservation efforts, the relentless poaching poses a severe challenge to the survival of this iconic species, raising concerns among environmentalists and authorities alike.

The authorities are intensifying their efforts to curb this illegal trade and protect the Himalayan Musk Deer, emphasizing the need for public awareness and collaborative initiatives to ensure the continued existence of this unique and endangered species in the region.
