The state of Uttarakhand faces a significant shortage of blood donors, with only 1 percent of the population participating in voluntary donations, Kamal Sahu, an Indian Medical Association, Dehradun Chapter official said.

Sahu emphasizes the crucial need for voluntary donations, citing the increasing demand for blood and its components due to rising diseases and accidents.

Speaking at a Blood Donation Camp organized by the Manav Sewa Society in Ajabpur Khurd, Sahu highlights the health benefits of donating blood, noting that blood has a limited lifespan within the body and cannot be artificially replicated. He states that donating blood not only aids in saving lives but also improves the donor`s metabolism, with fresh blood formation occurring within 24-28 hours post-donation.

Furthermore, blood donation is linked to reducing the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and various lifestyle-related conditions by lowering blood pressure, uric acid, and cholesterol levels.

However, SP Khankriyal, a Trustee of the Manav Sewa Society, acknowledges that societal and cultural norms pose challenges to increase in voluntary blood donations, often due to traditional community-based attitudes. There is a critical need for more blood donors in Uttarakhand, efforts to promote voluntary donations face obstacles rooted in societal and cultural behaviors, Khankriyal further added.

Despite this, there is a pressing demand for blood and its components, especially among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, individuals with anemia, and those with thalassemia.
