Uttarakhand Strengthens Solid Waste Management System

Dehradun: Uttarakhand has stepped up efforts to improve solid waste management, with a target to complete legacy waste treatment and dumpsite remediation by December 2026.

Pollution Control Board Member Secretary Dr Parag Madhukar Dhakate said the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 focus on four-stream segregation—wet, dry, sanitary and special-care waste—along with digital monitoring and greater accountability of Bulk Waste Generators.

The state provides 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection across 1,314 wards in 108 Urban Local Bodies. Around 1,930 metric tonnes of waste is generated daily, with over 1,800 metric tonnes processed.

Officials said 61 legacy waste sites have been identified, while District Special Cells and digital vehicle tracking systems are being used to strengthen monitoring. Special waste management plans are also being emphasised for Char Dham and major tourism areas.
