Uttarakhand to Install First GLOF Early Warning System at Vasundhara Tal

Dehradun: Uttarakhand will install its first early warning system for glacial lake risks at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district to monitor and reduce the threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan flagged off the scientific team on Tuesday for the mission, scheduled from September 29 to October 15, 2026. The system will use advanced sensors, satellite communication and real-time data to monitor water levels, weather and other changes.

Scientists from CBRI Roorkee and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, along with SDRF, NDRF and ITBP personnel, are part of the expedition.

According to 2023 NRSC data, Uttarakhand has 344 glacial lakes, including 13 high-risk lakes. The Vasundhara Tal project will also provide a model for installing similar warning systems at other vulnerable locations.
