Dehradun: Uttarakhand cadre IFS officer Dharam Singh Meena, a 2009-batch officer, has been honoured with the Eco-Warrior Award 2026 for his innovative work in the revival of the Hewel River and scientific forest management. Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav presented the award at a ceremony in New Delhi.

Under Meena’s initiative in Tehri Garhwal, conservation work was carried out across 126 springs, 28 streams and 16 recharge zones. More than 1.58 lakh water conservation structures were created and over 20.62 lakh saplings planted.

The model focused on the entire river catchment, bringing forests, springs, streams, recharge zones and local communities together. The initiative has helped revive water sources and streams that were nearing depletion and has emerged as an example of community-based river restoration in Uttarakhand.
