Though authorities heaved a sigh of relief with extension of Smart City Project completion announced by the Union Urban Development Ministry, citizens are still apprehensive about delays. Dehradun was able to bag 22 sanctioned projects in her kitty worth Rs 1000 crores under the Smart City Project scheduled for completion in May this year. But the progress made so far in these projects does not show encouraging statistics.

A budgeted expenditure of Rs 530 crores has already been spent by the end of March 2023 while another set of schemes worth Rs 400 crores are in the pipeline under public-private partnership mode. A cursory look at various schemes paint a dismal picture about pace of work on these projects.

The green building project has yet to take off while merely 12 percent work has completed under child friendly projects category. Similarly, smart road and smart electricity pole projects for overhead cables achieved completion status of just 25 percent of entire work. Also, fifty percent work finished under integrated drainage and sewerage system can’t be considered satisfactory. Only the beautification of parade ground under the project has achieved 90 percent work progress. With the extension of completion of Smart City Project till June 2024, the authorities need to buckle up to devise smarter ways to make Dehardun a smart city sooner than later.
