New Delhi: significant push for Uttarakhand’s infrastructural and economic development, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on Monday, seeking approval for eight hydroelectric power projects across the state.

During the high-level meeting, CM Dhami emphasized the importance of these projects in boosting the state`s energy capacity and supporting sustainable development. He reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting the sanctity and ecological balance of the Ganga and other river systems, asserting that all proposed projects align with environmental regulations and expert recommendations.

A centerpiece of the proposal is the 114 MW Sela Urthing Hydroelectric Project, situated on the Dhauliganga River in Pithoragarh district. Highlighting its strategic location outside the Ganga Basin, Dhami pointed out that the project does not fall under the regulatory restrictions imposed on developments within the Ganga or its tributaries. He requested the Union Minister to expedite necessary approvals and direct officials for timely processing.

The Chief Minister also sought clearance for seven additional hydroelectric projects totaling 647 MW, all of which have been endorsed by a central committee led by the Cabinet Secretary and are backed by the Uttarakhand Government.

These projects, if approved, are expected to significantly contribute to Uttarakhand’s power generation capacity, enhance rural connectivity, and create employment opportunities while maintaining ecological safeguards.
