Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attended the “Democracy Fighters Felicitation Ceremony” held at the Himalayan Cultural Centre, Dehradun, marking 50 years since the imposition of Emergency in India. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, was also present at the event. CM Dhami felicitated 10 democracy fighters, including Narendra Kumar Mittal and Ranjeet Singh Juyal.

Calling the Emergency one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy, the Chief Minister said it was a time when press freedom, judicial dignity, and fundamental rights were trampled. He paid tribute to leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Lal Krishna Advani, who played a vital role in safeguarding democracy during those turbulent times.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the contribution of brave individuals from Uttarakhand who actively resisted the Emergency. He emphasized that today’s youth must be made aware of this history to understand the value of democracy.

CM Dhami mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to observe June 25 as “Constitution Betrayal Day” and referred to the recent release of “The Emergency Diaries” by Home Minister Amit Shah, which chronicles PM Modi’s role during the Emergency.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare of democracy fighters, CM Dhami announced that such felicitation programs will be organized every year.

The event was attended by Cabinet Minister Ganesh Joshi, Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt, and a large number of citizens.
