Residents of Jakhidhaar development block in Tehri district are grappling with a severe shortage of potable water, despite the government`s efforts dating back to 2006.

The Koshyaratal Pumping Scheme, initiated with the promise of alleviating the water crisis, has failed to deliver even a single drop of relief to the parched populace. An estimated ₹50 crores have been poured into the project, yet the faucets remain dry, leaving villagers desperate for a sip of water.

Adding to the paradox, a significant portion of Jakhnidhar is affected by the Tehri Dam, a monumental infrastructure designed to supply water to half of India`s capital, Delhi. However, the irony lies in the fact that while millions in the city benefit from this engineering marvel, those living in its immediate vicinity are left thirsting for basic sustenance.

In a bid to draw attention to the plight of his constituents, BJP legislator Kishor Upadhyaya penned a heartfelt letter to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, highlighting the dire drinking water situation in the region. Upadhyaya lamented the irony that rivers originating from Uttarakhand quench the thirst of 60 crore people across Ganga basin, while hill dwellers in the state struggle for access to water, a fundamental human need.

Despite the much-touted Jal Jeevan Mission championed by the Prime Minister, which aims to provide tap water to every household, the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. While taps have been installed, they remain dry, mocking the aspirations of those who had hoped for a lifeline amidst the arid landscape.

As the sun beats down relentlessly on the parched earth of Jakhidhaar, the promise of relief remains elusive, trapped in the quagmire of bureaucratic inefficiency and failed planning. With each passing day, the cries of the villagers grow louder, echoing the urgent need for tangible solutions to their water woes.
