NDMA Rings Alarm Bells: Extreme Heat Expected, Action Plan Mandatory

This year’s summer is expected to be harsher than usual. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory, warning that temperatures in March, April, and May will likely remain above normal. All states have been instructed to prepare immediate action plans to tackle the upcoming heatwave.

In a virtual meeting, NDMA reviewed the preparedness of all states, including Uttarakhand. Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman and USDMA officials participated. States have been advised to adjust school timings and working hours for laborers and MGNREGA workers to help people cope with the extreme heat.

It was recommended that hospitals set up special heat stroke rooms and ensure ambulances are equipped for such cases. Doctors will receive special training, and health centers must have cooling equipment. Uninterrupted power and water supply was also stressed.

Officials were directed to finalize State and District Disaster Management Plans (SDMP & DDMP) swiftly. Special SOPs are to be developed for districts with tunnels, dams, and large projects.

Meteorologists have forecasted higher-than-normal temperatures. NDMA has urged the public to stay cautious and take protective measures against heatwaves.
