Dehradun: The scenic slopes of Auli witnessed the grand inauguration of the Shitalkin Winter Carnival and National Skiing Championship 2026 on Friday. The four-day event, being held from February 13 to 16, has brought together 17 teams and more than 300 athletes from across the country.

Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj inaugurated the championship by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Addressing the gathering, he announced that the Winter Carnival will now be organised every year, with a vision to establish Auli as a premier winter sports destination and create employment opportunities for local youth and entrepreneurs.

The championship features national-level competitions in Alpine skiing, snowboarding and ski mountaineering (Skimo), showcasing top winter sports talent in the country.

Situated at an altitude of 2,500–3,050 metres, Auli is renowned for its natural skiing slopes and breathtaking Himalayan views, including the majestic Nanda Devi. The event is expected to further boost winter tourism and adventure sports in Uttarakhand.
