In a move to reduce increasing air pollution in the cities, the Uttarakhand Clean Mobility Policy 2024 envisaged phasing out old diesel-operated and pollution-emitting vehicles from all cities by 2027 as per the directions of National Green Tribunal.

The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) initiated preparations for reducing air pollution in all cities of the state a year ago. As part of this initiative, preparations are underway to phase out diesel-operated city buses and Vikrams (shared transport vehicles) from the cities and replace them either with CNG-operated or electric buses.

For this purpose, City Transport Corporations will be established in cities, which will operate under the Transport Corporation. The government has decided to provide a 50 percent subsidy or up to ₹15 lakhs on scrapping old commercial diesel vehicles and purchasing new vehicles.

Furthermore, if a commercial vehicle operator does not scrap their vehicle and operates it in another state after obtaining NOC, they will receive a maximum subsidy of ₹12 lakhs. This subsidy will be applicable to 25 to 32-seater city buses.
