World Bank Assures Continued Support for Disaster-Resilient Uttarakhand

Dehradun: The World Bank has assured continued support to Uttarakhand for disaster risk reduction and building a safer, more resilient state. World Bank Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer Pascal Donohoe said the state’s efforts are commendable given its vulnerability to natural disasters.

A high-level World Bank delegation led by Donohoe visited the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) on Wednesday and reviewed various World Bank-supported projects, including the U-PrePare initiative.

The team reviewed landslide mitigation measures, disaster-risk reduction technologies and challenges faced by the Himalayan state. It also inspected the USDMA building constructed using advanced earthquake-resistant and base-isolation technology and praised its disaster-resilient design.

Officials said World Bank-supported projects include the construction of 36 bridges, disaster shelters, procurement of advanced equipment and slope stabilisation works. These initiatives aim to strengthen the state’s disaster preparedness and response capacity.

Donohoe stressed the need for modern technology, scientific studies and stronger institutional capacity to reduce disaster risks in Uttarakhand. The World Bank team expressed its commitment to continuing financial and technical support for the state.
