IIT Roorkee Sets PhD Record at Convocation 2026, Awards 2,701 Degrees

Roorkee: IIT Roorkee concluded its two-day convocation on September 20, awarding degrees to a record 2,701 students. On the second day, 1,424 postgraduate and doctoral students received their degrees, including 518 PhD degrees—the highest ever in the institute’s history.

The second-day awards included 903 postgraduate degrees and three MS by Research degrees. The institute also awarded MS by Research degrees for the first time under the National Education Policy (NEP).

Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale attended as Chief Guest, while Dr. Kapil Garg was the Guest of Honour. A total of 71 awards, including 33 medals, were presented to postgraduate and doctoral students.

IIT Roorkee Director Prof. K.K. Pant highlighted the institute’s research achievements, noting that 172 women received PhD degrees. The two-day convocation saw 1,277 undergraduate, 903 postgraduate, 518 PhD and three MS by Research degrees awarded.
