Mussoorie & Rudrapur Generate Electricity from Waste

Efforts by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to balance ecology and economy are showing results in Uttarakhand. Under the waste-to-energy model, electricity and compost are now being produced from the waste generated in two cities of Rudrapur and Mussoorie.

The Rudrapur Municipal Corporation and Mussoorie Municipal Council have started producing electricity from waste under the waste-to-energy policy. The Rudrapur Municipal Corporation has even managed to clear years-old waste piles through this initiative.

The 40-ward Rudrapur Municipal Corporation produces 105 to 118 metric tons of waste daily. Previously, a large amount of this waste remained unprocessed at dumping sites for long periods. To address this, the Municipal Corporation began working on a waste-to-energy plant in November 2022 under the PPP (public-private partnership) model.

Now, this plant not only generates electricity but also produces organic compost. The plant has a capacity to process 50 tons of waste daily and is currently processing 30 tons per day. This results in the daily production of six kilowatts of electricity, along with organic compost named Kalyani.

The Mussoorie Municipal Council also began production from its waste-to-energy plant this May. This plant, operating under the PPP model, has a capacity of processing eight tons of waste per day. The waste processed by this plant is used to generate biogas, as well as organic compost. This scientific approach has enabled the effective management of waste in a tourist destination like Mussoorie.

The government has focused on balancing ecology and economy from day one, with special attention to green economy initiatives. Waste-to-energy policies have been developed for this purpose, and efforts are underway to produce electricity from waste in municipalities. We are committed to the protection of Uttarakhand`s environment at all costs.
