The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand does not require a religious certificate for every registration, clarified UCC Rules Committee member Manu Gaur. This applies only in cases where marriage between partners is prohibited, as specified in Schedule 01 of the UCC.

For live-in relationship registration, only four documents are required: proof of residence, date of birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and a rental agreement (if applicable).

Divorced individuals must submit a divorce decree, while those whose previous spouse has passed away or whose prior live-in relationship has ended need relevant documents.

Gaur emphasized that a religious certificate is required only for relationships falling under the prohibited category, which are rare in Uttarakhand. The provision is meant to simplify, not restrict, registrations.

Clarifying residency rules, Gaur stated that anyone living in Uttarakhand for at least one year can register under UCC, regardless of permanent or native residency status. Only registered individuals will be eligible for state government schemes, ensuring better resource management.

Though the registration form is 16 pages long, Gaur assured that the online process takes just 5-10 minutes, with Aadhaar details auto-filled. Offline registration can be completed within 30 minutes.

With UCC now in effect, Uttarakhand moves toward a simpler, more uniform legal framework for live-in relationships and civil matters.
