One of the oldest military academies in India, the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun has decided to do away with its ‘horse and buggy’ tradition in the forthcoming passing out parade of cadets next month.

IMA decided to opt out of 91-year-old tradition of bringing-in the chief guest for the passing out parade inspection on a ‘horse and buggy’ and replaced it with a swanky car. The chief guest, henceforth, will arrive at the parade grounds riding a car for the final inspection of the passing out parade. IMA has decided to incorporate the adoption of new arrangements at forthcoming passing out parade scheduled to be held on June 10 next month. IMA was established in 1932 and increased its capacity from merely 40 cadets to 1650 a year. The academy has so far trained 64,000 gentlemen cadets for the Indian Army and friendly nations.

The ‘horse and buggy’ was introduced before Independence and remained in fashion for a very long time. Arrival of the chief guest at IMA for inspection of the passing out parade on a four-horse drawn carriage remained etched in the memories of a generations of cadets and their parents likewise. The decommissioned buggy was gifted by Maharaja of Patiala in 1978 . Astride a buggy, albeit drawn by only two horses, the deputy commandant and other guests used to arrive at the passing out parade in similar fashion. Henceforth, ‘horse and buggy’ tales would be part of nostalgia and memoirs for generations to come.
