FDA Tightens Vigil on Packaged Water Quality This Summer

Dehradun: With rising temperatures and the onset of the tourist season, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) Department of Uttarakhand has gone on high alert. Strict directives have been issued across the state to ensure the quality and proper storage of packaged drinking water and cold beverages.

Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar, Secretary of Health and Commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration, stated, “The state government is fully committed to protecting public health. During this sensitive summer season, no compromise on the quality of food and beverages will be tolerated. All officials have been instructed to conduct regular inspections and ensure that packaged water and cold drinks sold in the market meet the required standards. Strict action will be taken against any seller or supplier found violating the norms.”

Additional Commissioner of the FDA, Tajbar Singh Jaggi, explained that these orders have been issued under the direction of Dr. Rajesh Kumar. He said, “During the summer, the demand for packaged water and cold beverages increases significantly. However, we have observed that at many places, these products are being stored in the open and handled improperly, which affects their quality and poses serious health risks. The department had been receiving continuous complaints regarding this issue.”

Dr. Kumar also appealed to consumers to use only certified and licensed products and to report any irregularities to the department so that swift action can be taken.

The department has instructed all its officers to increase inspections and sample testing. It has emphasized that public health is a top priority and no negligence in food quality will be tolerated, especially in this sensitive season.

This move by the department is not only commendable but also timely to ensure consumer safety during the hot summer months.
