Uttarkashi: More than 100 people are missing and at least one person has died after a powerful cloudburst triggered flash floods in Dharali village, Uttarkashi district, on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 1:30 PM, the Kheerganga river overflowed following the cloudburst, sending a surge of muddy water and debris down the mountains, submerging roads and buildings. Dharali lies just 2 km from Harsil, home to an Indian Army base and an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp. At least 10 soldiers are among the missing.

Rescue operations are under way, with around 190 people rescued so far, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said. He visited the area on Wednesday. Sludge, debris, and damaged roads are slowing down rescue efforts, though helicopters have been deployed to assist.

The floods also blocked part of the Bhagirathi River, creating an artificial lake that has submerged large areas, including a government helipad. Officials warn this poses a major threat to downstream villages if the water isn’t drained soon.

With more heavy rain forecast, schools have been shut in several areas, and locals have been advised to stay away from landslide-prone zones.

Uttarakhand, prone to such disasters, has witnessed deadly flash floods in the past—most notably in 2013 and 2021, which claimed hundreds of lives.
