Dehradun: To boost winter tourism, the Uttarakhand government is set to launch a Snow Leopard Tour, offering travellers a rare chance to spot the elusive big cat in its natural Himalayan habitat.

State Tourism Secretary Dhiraj Garbyal said the tour will begin on a pilot basis in Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district. Other high Himalayan areas, including Gangotri, will also be opened in a controlled manner during winter. The launch date is yet to be announced.

Known as the “Ghost of the Mountains”, snow leopards are extremely rare and difficult to spot, making the experience highly sought after by wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Officials said strict eco-sensitive protocols will be followed to protect the endangered species and preserve the fragile ecosystem.

The Snow Leopard Tour is part of a broader Winter Tourism Plan, which includes winter carnivals in Mussoorie, Nainital and Uttarkashi, an International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh, wildlife tourism in Jim Corbett, Nandaur and Gangotri, and adventure activities such as skiing and trekking in Auli, Khalia Top and Bednidhar.

The initiative aims to position Uttarakhand as a year-round tourism destination with a strong focus on responsible travel.
