Tehri Set to Become Energy Hub of North India, PM Modi to Launch 250 MW Unit

Dehradun: Uttarakhand’s Tehri is set to become a major energy storage hub in North India with the expansion of its pumped storage project. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate a new 250 MW unit.

With this addition, the Tehri pumped storage plant’s capacity will reach 1000 MW—an unmatched benchmark in North India. The total hydropower capacity of the Tehri complex will rise to 2400 MW, combining Tehri (1000 MW), pumped storage (750 MW), and Koteshwar (400 MW).

Pumped storage technology stores energy by pumping water to a higher reservoir and generates electricity during peak demand, helping maintain grid stability.

The fourth unit of the project is nearly complete and will begin operations after inauguration, marking a significant milestone in India’s energy storage sector.
