CNG, EV Buses to Phase Out Diesel Buses in Dehardun

In a significant move toward sustainable urban transportation, the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority convened under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary has laid out plans to establish a special purpose vehicle dedicated to revolutionizing public transport in Dehradun. The primary objective is to phase out diesel city buses, a crucial step aimed at curbing pollution levels in the city.

The initiative outlines a transition to a fleet exclusively comprising CNG and electric buses within Dehradun city limits. A separate entity, the City Transport Corporation, will be established under the umbrella of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation to oversee the implementation of this eco-friendly initiative. Under the ongoing Smart City Project, 30 electric buses are already operational and will be assimilated into the City Transport Corporation.

The priority for the initial phase will be Dehradun city, addressing pressing transportation issues. Subsequently, the plan extends to include other prominent cities such as Rishikesh, Haridwar, Haldwani, Nainital, and Kashipur.

Presently, the transport department has issued 319 permits, but only 178 buses are actively operating on city roads, a decline from the pre-corona period when the number stood at 279. Despite the reduced fleet, city buses cater to approximately 40,000 passengers daily within a 35-kilometer radius of the city.

The phasing out of diesel buses aligns with environmental conservation efforts mandated by National Green Tribunal, aiming to mitigate pollution and enhance air quality in Dehradun.

This ambitious initiative signals a paradigm shift in the city`s approach to public transportation, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility. The establishment of the City Transport Corporation and the transition to cleaner alternatives underscore the commitment to creating a greener and healthier urban landscape in Dehradun.
