Dehraduns Dragon Fruit Cultivation Readies Farmers To Cash-In

The scenic Doon Valley is witnessing the rise of an exotic fruit as dragon fruit cultivation sees a sustained and gradual increase in acreage. Reports from villages in the Dehradun district reveal that, for the first time, the Horticulture department has set an ambitious target to bring 40 hectares of land under dragon fruit cultivation. To achieve this goal, the department plans to distribute 14,000 saplings among local farmers.

The initiative aims to not only expand the cultivation area but also boost the economic status of farmers in regions like Doiwala, Kalsi, Sahaspur, Raipur, and Vikasnagar, where smaller fields make dragon fruit cultivation a preferred choice.

The demand for dragon fruit is soaring, particularly in Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh markets. This exotic fruit, fetching a price ranging from Rs 350 to 500 per kilogram, has become a lucrative option for farmers in the region. Dragon fruit, known for its rich content of vitamin C and carotenoids that enhance immunity, is proving to be a healthy addition to the regular diet. Abundant in dietary fiber, it also promotes a healthy digestive system. Moreover, the fruit boasts essential nutrients such as antioxidants, lycopene, and beta-carotene, contributing to its nutritional value.

If the Horticulture department successfully achieves its target, not only will the dragon fruit cultivation area be extended further, but it will also mark a significant economic upliftment for local farmers. The vibrant hues of dragon fruit are not only transforming the landscape but also promising a fruitful future for agriculture in the Doon Valley.
