Police Book 28 After Panchayat Fines Backward Caste Man for Not Playing Drum
In a recent incident that has escalated tensions between Scheduled Caste and Upper Caste communities in Joshimath, police have booked 28 individuals. The case stems from an event in Subhai-Chanchdi village, where a Scheduled Caste man was fined for not playing the drum at a religious fair.
Scheduled Caste members reported that during a Baisakhi fair in May, Pushkar Lal, a drummer from their community, was assigned the task of playing drums but was unable to perform due to ill health. Allegedly angered by this, Upper Caste villagers convened a Panchayat and imposed a Rs 5000 fine on Pushkar Lal.
Despite Pushkar Lal paying the fine on May 3, tensions persisted. Scheduled Caste villagers claim a subsequent Panchayat decided to boycott their families, restricting their access to water, forest, and land. They were allegedly barred from using the village`s natural water sources.
Upon learning of the alleged discrimination, the Joshimath Kotwali police registered a case against 28 Upper Caste individuals. The police investigation is ongoing.
