The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) has prepared a detailed action plan to study and monitor glacier lakes in the state. A meeting chaired by Secretary of Disaster Management Vinod Kumar Suman on Friday discussed the initiative with various scientific institutions.

Thirteen glacier lakes have been identified in Uttarakhand, five of which are categorized as A-grade. The survey of Vasudhara Lake in Chamoli has been completed, while the survey of four A-grade lakes in Pithoragarh is planned to be completed by 2025.

To monitor these lakes, equipment like water level sensors, automatic weather stations, and thermal imaging devices will be installed. Priority will be given to developing an early warning system and studying sediment deposits and water drainage paths.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is also supporting the monitoring of glacier lakes. Scientists emphasized the need for remote sensing technology and better coordination among institutions. USDMA called this a critical step towards preventing potential disasters in the region.
