Dehradun: Just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Tehri has received a major gift. The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a ₹1,050 crore loan agreement to promote climate-resilient tourism around Tehri Lake. The project is expected to directly benefit over 87,000 local residents and nearly 2.7 million annual tourists.

According to Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry, this initiative will help position Uttarakhand as an all-season tourism destination, with Tehri Lake as a priority area. ADB’s Kai Wei Yeo added that the project will showcase a new tourism model around a hydropower lake while strengthening the local economy.

The project aims to build climate-resilient tourism infrastructure, reduce landslide and flood risks through nature-based solutions, promote inclusive services with women and youth participation, support small entrepreneurs with livelihood grants, and provide disabled-friendly facilities.

The project is set to give Tehri a fresh identity on the tourism map and provide new momentum to Uttarakhand’s economy.
