Dehradun: Uttarakhand will soon launch a cooperative-based taxi service to promote employment and strengthen the state’s economy, Cooperative Minister Dhan Singh Rawat said. The initiative is inspired by the cooperative taxi service ‘Bharat Taxi’, recently launched by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

Rawat said Uttarakhand is emerging as a major centre for tourism, pilgrimage and destination weddings, with over 30 lakh pilgrims visiting annually for the Char Dham Yatra and more than four crore tourists and pilgrims visiting the state last year.

He said the proposed taxi service will focus on the safety, dignity, ownership and social security of drivers. Drivers of two-, three- and four-wheelers will be linked to the scheme, benefiting local youth, especially in rural and mountainous areas. Officials have been directed to begin work, and the roadmap will be released soon.
