Monsoon Halts Rafting Operations Eco-Tourism Region in Garhwal Region
With the onset of the monsoon, rafting operations in the Kaudiyala and Muni-ki-Reti eco-tourism zones of the Garhwal region have been closed, effective Monday. This precautionary measure ensures the safety of adventure enthusiasts as heavy rains cause the Ganga and its tributaries to swell, making rafting dangerous.
From September 15, 2023, to June 30, 2024, approximately 415,000 rafting lovers enjoyed the adventure sport. However, from July 1 for the next two months, all rafting and related adventure sports activities will be suspended in the Ganga. The river rafting season, typically functional from September to June, is operational at various points along the Ganga, including Kaudiyala, Marine Drive, Shivpuri, Brahampuri, and the Clubhouse track till Lakshman Jhula, covering Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, and Dehradun districts. These locations offer rafting routes ranging from 5 km to 25 km.
Every year, the monsoon season from July 1 to August 30 sees a halt in rafting activities due to safety concerns. During the monsoon break, rafting staff and workers, predominantly from the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, return to their homes. This period is also used for raft maintenance and securing bookings for the winter months.
The Kaudiyala and Muni-ki-Reti eco-tourism zone is home to 250 registered rafting operators with around 600 rafts, catering to the large number of adventure sports enthusiasts visiting the region each season.
