Uttarakhand is set to become the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced that the UCC will be implemented this month, i.e., January. Preparations for its implementation have been completed following approval from the state cabinet and the President`s office.

CM Dhami stated that the law is being introduced to ensure women`s safety, eliminate practices like halala and polygamy, and establish equal legal provisions for all citizens. He hinted that a formal announcement could be made on Republic Day (January 26).

He further informed that, as part of the campaign to investigate madrassas and remove encroachments, 5,500 acres of land have been freed so far. Web portals and mobile apps have been prepared to facilitate the implementation of the UCC, and officials are being trained for the process. The Chief Minister described it as a major step toward the state`s development and equality.
