Dehradun: Uttarakhand has completed one year of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), becoming the first state in India to enforce the law. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the reform has strengthened equality, justice and women’s empowerment in the state.

The UCC, passed by the Assembly in February 2024 and implemented on January 27, 2025, was based on extensive consultations and reflects the vision of Article 44 of the Constitution.

According to the government, harmful practices such as triple talaq, polygamy, child marriage and halala have been banned under the new law, with no cases of halala or polygamy reported in the past year.

Administrative reforms have led to a sharp rise in digital registrations, with marriage registrations increasing from about 67 per day to over 1,400 daily. More than 4.7 lakh marriages have been registered so far.

The UCC has also enabled online services for divorce, wills and live-in relationships. Over five lakh applications were processed with a resolution rate above 95 per cent and no reported privacy violations.
