Antibiotic Misuse Emerging as a ‘Silent Pandemic’
Dehradun: An awareness program on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was organized at the Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Uttaranchal University. Senior orthopedic surgeon Dr. Manik Rana from Graphic Era Hospital addressed pharmacy students, warning that misuse of antibiotics could turn AMR into a global “silent pandemic” within the next 15–20 years.
He highlighted that self-medication, incomplete antibiotic courses, and improper disposal of pharmaceutical waste are key drivers of resistance. AMR can spread through environmental contamination and even via the food chain.
Dr. Rana explained that bacteria develop resistance by producing enzymes that inactivate drugs, altering their cell walls to block entry, or pumping the drug out of their cells.
He urged future pharmacists to act as frontline defenders by following the “Five Rights” — right patient, right drug, right dose, right duration, and right route — to help slow the spread of AMR.
