In Uttarakhand, online users are falling victim to cyber thugs at an alarming rate. These criminals prey on unsuspecting individuals, often targeting hard-earned money in the guise of job placements or online trade. The situation has escalated to the point where the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttarakhand Police is facing unprecedented challenges.

What`s particularly concerning is the use of advanced technology by these cyber thugs. They now manipulate voices using Artificial Intelligence (AI), making detection even more difficult. Over the past six months, an average of 58 people per day have been defrauded by these criminals.

The scale of the problem is staggering. From October 2023 to March 2024, the helpline number 1930 received 10,600 reports of cyber fraud, resulting in a total loss of Rs 46 crore for online users in the region. While the Cyber Station Police managed to freeze Rs 4.25 crores from the accused accounts, it`s clear that the issue persists and is growing.

Comparing the data from 2023 to 2024 reveals a worrying trend. Between October and December 2023, there were 5044 reported cases of cyber fraud, a number that increased to 5556 between January and March 2024. In March alone, 1748 people fell victim to cyber fraud, losing a staggering Rs 12 crore.

This rise in cybercrime underscores the urgent need for heightened cybersecurity measures and public awareness campaigns to protect online users, especially in vulnerable individuals in Doon.
