A final approval from Union Urban Development Ministry is eagerly awaited to begin work on proposed Neo metro services by the Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation (UKMRC). The ₹1900 crore Neo metro project proposal to construct east-west and north-south corridors has been lying with the centre for sometime now.

Along with Dehradun, Nasik City has also submitted its proposal for the Neo metro project. However, whichever city gets the nod first will automatically become the first Neo metro city in the country.

Neo Metro is believed to provide travel experience of international standards at par with metro systems in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. It is a state-of-art, comfortable, energy efficient, minimal noise pollution and environment friendly system. Neo Metro has been designed to negotiate sharp curves and steep gradient. It can be upgraded to Light Metro with incremental cost input in future as per traffic demand. Neo metro can handle 8,000-10,000 passengers per hour per direction during peak hours in cities like Dehradun which doesn’t require full-fledged metro system like DMRC.

The North-South corridor proposed by UKMRC will begin from ISBT and terminate at Gandhi park while east-west corridor will start from Forest Research Institute and terminate at Raipur with construction of a metro shed at the same place.

UKMRC has already acquired 11.67 hectares of land from state government and ministry of defence and received approvals on DPR from the state government. Once final go ahead comes from the centre UKMRC, in all probability, may start tender process inviting bids from contractors.
