Uttarakhand Boosts Tech-Driven Forest Fire Prevention

The Uttarakhand Forest Department has established an Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) for forest fire management and monitoring. To strengthen the information and warning system, the Forest Fire Uttarakhand Mobile App has been developed, which will be used by departmental personnel, self-help groups, forest fire management committees, village heads, and other stakeholders.

To address complaints related to forest fires, human-wildlife conflicts, illegal logging, and encroachments, the Integrated Helpline Number 1926 has been launched. Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) Dr. Dhananjay Mohan and Additional Chief Conservator of Forests Nishant Verma are issuing regular guidelines to ensure effective use of the app and helpline.

Senior officials have been appointed as district-level nodal officers in highly sensitive districts to oversee forest fire prevention. These officers conduct field inspections to ensure necessary actions are taken.

According to the Forest Survey of India (FSI), this year has recorded the lowest number of fire alerts in the past three years. From November 1, 2024, to March 26, 2025, Uttarakhand ranked 15th on the Near Real-Time Fire Alert list.

The initiative of celebrating ‘On Diwas’ has been introduced to raise awareness about forest fire prevention. Programs were held in Sheetlakhet (Almora) on April 1 and Advani (Pauri) on March 26, 2025.

To replicate the Sheetlakhet Model of Almora Forest Division across the state, Exposure Visits are being conducted. So far, 20 teams from 15 forest divisions have participated, including over 970 personnel and village representatives.

These initiatives by the Uttarakhand Forest Department mark significant steps toward effective forest fire management and enhanced community engagement.
