UCC in Uttarakhand Receives 1.5 Lakh Applications in 4 Months

New Delhi: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that over 1.5 lakh applications have been received under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in just four months since its implementation. Speaking at the Chief Ministers’ Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Dhami said applications have come from nearly 98% of the state’s villages, reflecting widespread public engagement.

To facilitate access, the state launched a dedicated portal, mobile app, and integrated over 14,000 Common Service Centers. Auto-escalation and grievance redressal mechanisms have also been established.

CM Dhami thanked the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their guidance, noting that the UCC was a key promise in the 2022 Assembly election manifesto. A committee led by Justice Ranjana Desai conducted extensive consultations, receiving around 2.32 lakh suggestions.

The UCC Bill was passed on February 7, 2024, received Presidential assent on March 11, and came into force on January 27, 2025, making Uttarakhand the first state to implement Article 44 of the Constitution.

The UCC aims to ensure equal rights across all communities, banning practices such as polygamy, halala, child marriage, and triple talaq. It provides equal inheritance rights to daughters and all children, regardless of their birth circumstances. Parents have also been granted property rights in their children’s assets.

Live-in relationships must now be registered, with confidentiality and parental notification provisions. The UCC excludes Scheduled Tribes to protect their traditions.

CM Dhami emphasized that the UCC promotes equality and social justice without interfering with core religious beliefs, marking a significant step toward constitutional reform and gender equality.
