Dehradun: A major scam has been exposed in the Dehradun Municipal Corporation’s sanitation committee. Investigations revealed that in 31 wards, salaries worth crores were withdrawn in the name of 99 fake employees.

The case, which surfaced about a year and a half ago, is now under police investigation. Former committee presidents, secretaries, and treasurers are being questioned. Most irregularities were found in newly created wards, though some older ones are also involved.

Three months ago, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Law) Gaurav Bhasin filed a complaint with the police. In 2019, the system of paying sanitation workers directly through DBT was replaced by transferring lump sums to the committees’ accounts. Due to the lack of monitoring, this loophole was misused, leading to massive fraud.

The scam raises serious questions about the functioning of the Municipal Corporation and political interference.
