A snow leopard was captured on camera while strolling through Chorgaad in Gangotri National Park, Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. The footage, taken on December 27 last year by a camera installed on a wooden bridge at Chorgaad, offers a rare sighting of this elusive cat.

Gangotri National Park, home to approximately 40 snow leopards, provides a crucial habitat for this endangered species. In an unprecedented event, a camera also recorded a snow leopard and a common leopard moving together at the Kedartal trek, marking the first documented instance of these two species coexisting at such a high altitude.

Cameras are installed within the park between December and March, when it is closed to tourists, to monitor wildlife activities. Last year, 35 cameras were strategically placed in various locations including Kedartal Trek, Gangotri Trek, Gartang Gali, Hamkya Nala, Hingoli Gaad, Chorgaad, Sunala, and Thangla. Reviewing the footage from these cameras has revealed significant wildlife activity during this period.

Once the park reopens to visitors in March-April, wildlife typically retreats to higher, less accessible areas. This recent footage provides valuable insights into the behavior and habitat use of the park`s wildlife during the tourist off-season.
