The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $200 million loan agreement to enhance water supply, sanitation, urban mobility, and related services in Uttarakhand. Representing the government, Joint Secretary Juhi Mukherjee highlighted that the project aligns with India’s urban development agenda, aiming to improve living conditions and promote sustainability.

ADB’s Country Director Mio Oka noted that the project will develop infrastructure resilient to landslides and climate-related risks, supporting the health and safety of Uttarakhand’s population. In Haldwani, the project will improve transport, flood management, and drainage, and introduce climate-resilient roads, CNG and electric buses, and an early warning system.

Additionally, four cities—Champawat, Kichha, Kotdwar, and Vikasnagar—will benefit from a climate-resilient water pipeline, smart water meters, and sanitation facilities. Training initiatives will empower women in operations and maintenance of services. Co-financed by the European Investment Bank with $191 million, the project also supports gender equality and revenue generation in state agencies.
