Uttarakhand Gears Up to Become Pharma Hub

Dehradun: Following directives from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, a crucial review meeting was held today at the Food Safety and Drug Administration headquarters in Dehradun with key stakeholders from the pharma industry. The meeting was chaired by State Drug Controller Tajbar Singh Jaggi and attended by representatives from over 30 pharmaceutical companies.

The main focus of the meeting was to address recent cases of substandard drugs, ensure quality control, and protect the industrial reputation of the state. Manufacturers raised serious concerns over CDSCO’s issuance of drug alerts without complete investigation, which they said harms their credibility and the state’s image.

The Drug Controller clarified that while the government stands firmly with the industry, there will be no compromise on drug quality. Companies were instructed to strictly follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and maintain proper production records.

Health Secretary and Commissioner of Food Safety & Drug Administration, Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar, shared that Uttarakhand currently has 285 operational pharma units, out of which 242 are WHO-certified. The state contributes approximately 20% of India’s total drug production and exports to more than 20 countries.

A newly established high-tech laboratory in Dehradun, supported by both the state and central governments, will soon receive NABL accreditation—making its reports globally accepted. Dr. Kumar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a "zero-tolerance" policy against substandard medicines and assured strict legal action against violators.

Uttarakhand is rapidly emerging as a trusted destination for high-quality pharmaceutical manufacturing and global investment.
