Uttarakhand to Introduce Green Cess on Outside Vehicles from November

Dehradun: To mark 25 years of Uttarakhand’s formation, the state government will impose a green cess on vehicles from other states starting November. Revenue will be used for air pollution control, green infrastructure, and smart traffic management.

CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said the move reflects the state’s commitment to a clean, pollution-free environment. The cess will be collected via FASTag.

According to the State Pollution Control Board, road dust (55%) and vehicle emissions (7%) are major contributors to Dehradun’s air pollution.

In the Clean Air Survey-2024, Rishikesh ranked 14th and Dehradun 19th. The cess is expected to generate around ₹100 crore annually, to be spent on pollution control and smart traffic systems.

The initiative aims to control old polluting vehicles, provide incentives for clean fuel vehicles, and offer exemptions for electric, hydrogen, solar, and battery-operated vehicles.
