Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government is preparing a new framework to regulate trekking and mountaineering activities in the state with a focus on safety, environmental protection and local employment.

The proposed rules include mandatory registration of trekking operators, medical fitness certificates for trekkers, compulsory mountaineering certification for guides and stricter safety protocols during expeditions. A minimum age limit of 14 years for high-altitude treks has also been proposed.

Officials said district-level monitoring committees, waste management measures and carrying capacity norms will also be introduced. Trekking agencies may be required to provide at least 50% employment to local residents.

The move comes after several fatal trekking incidents in Uttarakhand, including the 2024 Sahastra Tal tragedy in Uttarkashi.
