In a significant move, the Governor of Uttarakhand has approved a bill that grants a 10% job reservation in government roles for veterans of the state`s formation movement and their families. The decision is expected to benefit over 11,000 individuals who played a key role in Uttarakhand`s journey to statehood.

The bill, passed by the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6, 2024, was initially introduced in September 2023 but was sent to a Select Committee for review after some lawmakers called for further scrutiny. Following the committee`s recommendations, the revised bill was approved and sent to the Governor, who gave it the green light in February 2024.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised the Governor`s decision, stating that recognizing the contributions of the statehood movement veterans is a top priority for his administration. "We will never forget the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for our state. This reservation is a small step in acknowledging their invaluable contributions," he said.

This legislation comes after a previous attempt to provide similar benefits was struck down by the Uttarakhand High Court in 2018 as unconstitutional. The new bill`s passage is seen as a long-awaited victory for the movement`s veterans, solidifying their place in the state`s history and ensuring their welfare.
