Dehradun: The killing of a Tripura student in a racially motivated attack has sparked outrage, with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assuring strict action and the early arrest of the absconding accused.

The victim, Anjel Chakma (24), a final-year MBA student from Tripura’s Unakoti district, was fatally stabbed in Dehradun on December 9 after he and his younger brother Michael were allegedly abused with racial slurs and attacked at a local market.

Police have arrested five accused so far, including two minors sent to a juvenile reform home. One accused remains absconding, with a ₹25,000 reward announced. Raids are underway, and teams have been sent to Nepal to trace the suspect.

Condemning the incident, CM Dhami said such acts are unacceptable and assured that all accused will be dealt with strictly. Anjel’s body was flown to Agartala for last rites, while his brother remains under treatment. The incident has led to protests in Tripura and other northeastern states, with student groups demanding a national law against racial hate crimes.
